hope that by learning where we came from we can decide
where to lead this nation.
The Civil War began at 4:30 a.m., on the 12th of
April, 1861, when the first Confederate shell smashed into
Fort Sumpter. Within weeks militia were being organized in
both the North and the South. The Bloody years of war that
followed cost the lives of 600,000 men, two percent of the
country's population. At the heart of the conflict, the
issue of slavery divided states, nationalities, neighbors
and even families.
